Scribner Introduces Membrane Sensing Reference Electrode Accessory for Advanced Half-Cell Measurements

Enabling reliable half-cell potential measurements without compromising cell performance

Southern Pines, NC —Scribner is pleased to announce the release of its new Membrane Sensing Reference Electrode Accessory, designed to enable accurate half-cell potential measurements with virtually any Scribner cell fixture. Developed for electrochemical researchers working in alkaline electrolysis, CO₂ electrolysis, fuel cells, and related electrochemical systems, the accessory provides a simple and reliable method for conducting reference electrode measurements without disrupting normal cell operation.

The membrane potential sensing method is an established approach for isolating electrode behavior while maintaining representative operating conditions. By sensing the membrane potential directly, researchers can independently measure anode and cathode performance without significantly affecting overall cell performance.

The new accessory integrates seamlessly with Scribner’s electrochemical hardware platforms and includes gasket and membrane templates to simplify assembly and experimental setup. Multiple reference electrode options are available to support a wide range of research applications and operating environments.

To demonstrate the capabilities of the accessory, Scribner has also released a new technical white paper highlighting its implementation in alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) using the 857 Electrochemical Flowbench and Scribner electrolysis cell hardware. The application note demonstrates stable and reproducible half-cell measurements under realistic operating conditions while preserving full-cell performance.

The white paper further showcases how the membrane sensing approach can be used to isolate anode and cathode overpotentials independently, providing researchers with deeper insight into electrode kinetics, degradation mechanisms, and material performance.

“The ability to reliably perform half-cell measurements under true operating conditions is becoming increasingly important for electrochemical researchers developing next-generation electrolyzers and electrochemical devices,” said Jarrett Mansergth, Director of Science at Scribner. “This new accessory gives researchers a practical and flexible solution that integrates directly into existing Scribner test platforms.”
